Council

Commune with a surface area of 1854 hectares, Leysin is located in the canton of Vaud - more specifically in the district of Aigle - and is home to some 3'800 inhabitants. Situated at an altitude of 1263 metres, the Leysin commune has a cosmopolitan air due to its numerous international schools.

Residents are known as "Leysenouds" or, less commonly, Lè Faragnat (nickname which literally means "the burnt ones") The name "Leysin" is derived from the German "Leissins" which was the name of the village in 1232. In 1352, it was known by the name of "Leisins", in 1355 "Lisin" and finally, in 1402, "Leysins". The final "s" was later dropped.

The commune, which lives first and foremost on its tourism, also accommodates several international schools. These establishments count around 1'000 students as year-round residents making Leysin a multi-cultural commune boasting a mix of some 100 different nationalities!

The Leysin commune's coat of arms is distinguished by a chamois, pine tree and the mountains representing the Tour D' Aï and the Tour de Mayen. A genuine hallmark of Leysin.
